WFEO General Assembly meetings and 7th World Engineers Convention, Prague 2023



The World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) held its biennial General Assembly meetings from 9 to 15 October 2023 in Prague, Czech Republic.

In this framework, WFEO also held its Board and Board committees meetings, its Standing Technical Committees (STCs) and Policy Implementation Committees (PICs) meetings, and its Executive Council meeting.

The meetings were hosted by the WFEO’s national member in the Czech Republic, CSVTS, which organized the 7th World Engineers Convention (WEC2023), at the Prague Congress Centre, from 11 to 13 October.

The WEC2023 welcomed speakers and delegates from 76 countries. During the 3-day conference sessions, speakers presented state-of-the-art knowledge and solutions to all kinds of engineering topics put into relation with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
We were proud to receive video messages from the United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres, and the UNESCO Assistant-Director General for Natural Sciences Lidia Brito.

During the Young Engineers Forum that took place on 11 October, WFEO Past President Dr Marlene Kanga launched the World Engineering Day 2024 Hackathon for engineering students.

During the WFEO Committee on Education in Engineering session held on 12 October, the new journal Engineering Education Review (EER) was launched, as well as a new issue (no 21) of IDEAS. EER is a new journal in the field of Engineering Education hosted by the Tsinghua University.

The final WEC2023 Declaration (available here) was signed by the Convention’s Chair and CSVTS President Prof. Daniel Hanus, and WFEO President Prof. José Vieira during the Closing Ceremony, on 13 October.

WFEO’s Executive Council was held at Prague Congress Center on 13 October

The Council approved a series of amendments to the Federation’s Rules of Procedure, to improve its electoral and decision processes’ effectiveness and transparency.
The Council also approved the updating of the WFEO Code of Ethics, which was conducted by an ad hoc working group under the authority of WFEO Past President Prof. Gong Ke.
New applications for membership were approved by the Council. The Federation is proud to announce its new member institutions:

Finally, the Council approved the Laureates for the following WFEO awards:

  • The WFEO Gree Women in Engineering Prize
  • The WFEO CCC H.J. Sabbagh Prize for Excellence in Engineering Construction
  • The WFEO Medal for Excellence in Engineering Education

Highlights from its agenda included:

Elections of WFEO’s Board and Executive Council members (Find out more here)

  • President-elect: Mr Seng Chuan Tan, nominated by the Institution of Engineers Singapore, was elected and will become WFEO President for a 2-year term, 2025-2027.
  • Executive Vice-president: Ms Ania Lopez, nominated by the National Council of Engineers of Italy, was elected for a 4-year term, 2023-2027.
  • The following National Members representatives were elected for a 4-year term, 2023-2027:
    • Ms Nahla Ahmed Al Qasimi (Society of Engineers, United Arab Emirates),
    • Mr Miguel Fierro (Association of Engineers of Uruguay),
    • Ms He Jing (China Association for Science and Technology),
    • Mr Nathaniel Matalanga (Institution of Engineers Kenya) and
    • Mr Navinchandra Vasoya (Institution of Engineers India).

The GA approved the new or renewed hosts and chairs of Standing Technical Committees (STCs) and Policy Implementation Committees (PICs):

  • Committee on Energy hosted by Ingénieurs et Scientifiques de France (chair: Ms Marie-Line Vaiani);
  • Committee on Education in Engineering hosted by the Myanmar Engineering Council (chair: Mr Zaw Min Aung);
  • Committee on Capacity Building hosted by the Engineering Council of Zimbabwe (chair: Mr Martin Manuhwa);
  • Committee on Young Engineers/Future leaders hosted by the Federation of Lebanese Engineers (chair: Mr Firas Bou-Diab);
  • Committee on Innovative Technologies hosted by the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (chair: Ms Norlida Buniyamin);
  • Committee on Engineering and the Environment hosted by the China Association for Science of Technology (chair: Mr Wen Ling);
  • Committee on Anti Corruption hosted by the Ordre des Ingénieurs Tunisiens (chair: Mr Kamel Ayadi).

Amongst the three applicants to host the meetings, the proposal put on by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) was chosen.
The 2025 meetings will be held in Shanghai.

At the end of the General Assembly meeting, WFEO President José Vieira formally transmitted the leadership of the Federation to President-elect Mustafa Shehu.
