Water for All People: Equal Rights and Opportunities

Each year on 22 March, World Water Day highlights the importance of freshwater and the need for sustainable water management. The 2026 theme, “Water and Gender”, under the slogan “Where water flows, equality grows”, underscores the deep interconnection between access to water and gender equality.

Access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene is not only a basic human right; it is a critical enabler of social and economic development. Yet, in many parts of the world, women and girls continue to bear a disproportionate burden. The lack of nearby safe water sources and adequate sanitation facilities affects their health, safety, education, and economic opportunities, while limiting their participation in public and professional life.

Engineering plays a central role in addressing these challenges. From resilient infrastructure to innovative treatment systems and smart water management solutions, engineering enables communities to access reliable and safe water services. These advances directly contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6).

As a partner of UN-Water since 2023, the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) has actively contributed to the United Nations World Water Development Report 2026 (WWDR 2026), titled Water for All People: Equal Rights and Opportunities, which was officially launched on 19 March 2026 at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.

WFEO’s contribution was developed through the joint efforts of its Committee on Water and Committee on Women in Engineering, reflecting the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration. The contribution highlights how engineering solutions can support equitable access to water and sanitation, particularly in the context of increasing climate challenges.

It also emphasizes that technical solutions alone are not sufficient. Achieving sustainable and equitable outcomes requires gender-responsive engineering, inclusive governance, and the active participation of women at all levels of decision-making.

On this World Water Day, the message is clear: where water flows, equality grows. Engineering has a critical role to play in ensuring that water access becomes a driver of inclusion, opportunity, and sustainable development for all.
