WFEO Elections FAQ
- Will the election take place online or in person?
-
This year, as in 2023, all elections for Board and Council positions will be held in person during the General Assembly meeting.
- Who is eligible to vote in Executive Council elections?
-
All members of the General Assembly, i.e. one voter per voting member. Voting members are: the national members, the affiliate members, and the international members.
Member institutions must be in good standing to exercise their voting rights.
Voting rights are not weighted; each voting member has one vote.
- Who can vote on behalf of a voting member institution?
-
We usually accommodate for up to two seats per voting member institution. Each organization is responsible for ensuring that at least one individual is available to take part in each vote.
- When shall members be in good standing to be authorized to vote?
-
2 days before the start of the General Assembly (as it will be held in person).
- Is it possible to vote by proxy?
-
Yes. To give proxy to another member institution, a member and the member receiving the proxy shall both be in good standing four weeks before the start of the General Assembly.
The proxy shall be sent to the Secretariat. Each member is entitled to receive a maximum of two proxies. The proxy form is downloadable from this page.
- Can a candidate run for multiple positions as in previous elections?
-
No. The regulation was amended in 2023 and it is no longer possible to compete for more than one position. This was done, in particular, to simplify the election process during the General Assembly, so that each election process is less dependent on other elections.
- How does the vote take place (during in person General Assemblies)?
-
The vote is done by secret ballot. A separate roll call is made for each election: voting member institutions are called in alphabetical order.
- Who oversees the election process?
-
This is the duty of the Electoral Commission. This commission is set up by the Executive Board based on a proposal from the Nominations Committee. To ensure transparency and independence, the Commission shall not include any candidate or member of the Executive Board, and shall include a non-participant to the General Assembly.
The Commission is submitted to the General Assembly’s approval prior to the elections.
The Commission is responsible for the voting operations, votes count and results announcement. Any complaint or reservation regarding the election process during the General Assembly shall be submitted to the Chair of the Commission.
