SUMMARY:WFEO-YEFL webinar "Leveraging Satellite Data to Address Poverty: In
 novations and Impacts"
DESCRIPTION:\n\nThe WFEO Committee on Young Engineers/Future Leaders (WFEO-
YEFL) is honored to host a webinar titled "Leveraging Satellite Data to Ad
dress Poverty: Innovations and Impacts" that will be held on Wednesday 20
 November 2024 on Zoom\, at 4:00 PM CET (Paris) / 10:00 AM EST (Maryland).\
n\nThe registration link is available in this page.\n\nThis event is align
ed with the World Engineering Day Hackathon 2025 and will focus on the tra
nsformative potential of satellite data and advanced technologies in addre
ssing poverty\, achieving Sustainable Development Goal 1 (No Poverty)\, an
d fostering global innovation.\n\nKeynote Speaker\nThe webinar will featur
e Dr. Catherine Nakalembe\, Assistant Professor in the Department of Geogr
aphical Sciences at the University of Maryland and Director of the Africa
Program under NASA Harvest. Dr. Nakalembe is a renowned expert in applying
Earth observation data and machine learning to address agriculture and fo
od security challenges\, particularly in vulnerable regions.\n\nHer ground
breaking research and capacity-building efforts have directly influenced d
isaster risk financing\, agricultural monitoring systems\, and food securi
ty frameworks in various countries\, including Uganda\, Kenya\, and Mali.
Her impactful work has been recognized globally\, earning her prestigious
awards like the 2022 Golden Jubilee Medal (Uganda) and the 2020 Africa Foo
 d Prize.\n\nWebinar Objectives\nThis session aims to:\n\nExplore how satel
lite data and Earth observation tools can contribute to poverty reduction
efforts.\nShowcase innovative applications of satellite technology in agri
culture\, food security\, and disaster management.\nInspire meaningful dis
cussions on leveraging technology to achieve sustainable development goals
 \, particularly SDG 1.\n\nDr. Nakalembe’s Expertise\n\nDr. Nakalembe bri
 ngs a wealth of experience\, including:\n\n\nDeveloping machine learning t
ools for agricultural and disaster monitoring using satellite data.\nLeadi
ng capacity-building initiatives for government ministries and regional ag
encies in Africa.\nConducting research that has directly impacted policies
and programs\, including the Disaster Risk Financing Project in Karamoja\
 , Uganda\, which supported over 300\,000 drought-affected individuals.\nCo
llaborating with global organizations such as NASA\, USAID\, the Bill & Me
linda Gates Foundation\, and AGRA.\n\n\nSpeakers:\n\nDr. Catherine Nakalem
be\, Assistant Professor in the Department of Geographical Sciences at the
University of Maryland and Director of the Africa Program under NASA Harv
 est\nMustafa B. Shehu\, WFEO President\nFiras Bou Diab\, Chair of WFEO-YEF
L\n\n\nConclusion\nThis webinar promises to be a thought-provoking session
showcasing how technology\, particularly satellite data\, can revolutioni
ze global efforts to alleviate poverty. Participants will gain valuable in
sights into the intersection of innovation\, sustainability\, and developm
ent from leading experts and thought leaders.\n\nJoin us in this enriching
dialogue as we work together to inspire impactful solutions and advance s
ustainable development goals worldwide.\n\nFor more information:\n\n WFEO

erine Nakalembe Biography\n\nDr. Catherine Nakalembe is an assistant profe
ssor in the Department of Geographical Sciences at the University of Maryl
and. As the Director of the Africa Program under NASA Harvest and a NASA S
ERVIR Applied Science Team member\, she leads projects developing and appl
ying machine learning to Earth Observations to support agriculture and foo
d security monitoring\, early warning\, and disaster assessment. Her work
also leads training in using Earth observation tools to assess and forecas
t crop conditions and develop agricultural monitoring systems. Her capacit
y-building portfolio includes the government ministries in Kenya\, Rwanda\
, Tanzania\, Uganda\, and Mali\, as well as regional agencies such as the
Regional Centre For Mapping Resource For Development (RCMRD) and IGAD Clim
ate Prediction and Applications Center. Her work is funded by NASA\, USDA\
, AGRA\, Lacuna Fund (Meridian Institute)\, SwissRe Foundation\, Bill and
 Melinda Gates Foundation\, and USAID. \n\nDr. Nakalembe holds a Ph.D. in G
eographical Science from the University of Maryland. Her research thesis t
itled Agricultural Land Use\, Drought Impacts And Vulnerability: A Regiona
 l Case Study For Karamoja\, Uganda\, took a mixed-methods approach\, combi
ning remotely sensed satellite data\, national agricultural surveys\, cens
us\, and field data to expand on empirical knowledge on agricultural droug
ht\, land use and human perceptions of drought necessary for comprehensive
drought forecasting\, monitoring\, and management. Her thesis directly in
formed the development of the Disaster Risk Financing Project in her study
region\, Karamoja\, eventually supporting over 300\,000 individuals impac
ted by drought. Uganda received the 2019 GEO SDG Award-Uganda for applying
her research findings in their Disaster Risk Financing program from the G
roup on Earth Observations (GEO).\nShe also holds a Masters in Geography a
nd Environmental Engineering from Johns Hopkins University\, Baltimore\, M
aryland\, and a B.Sc. in Environmental Science from Makerere University Ka
mpala\, Uganda. \n\nHer honors include the 2022 Golden Jubilee Medal (the
highest civilian award of Uganda)\, 2021 Fellowship from the UK Humanitari
an Innovation Hub\, and the 2020 Africa Food Prize from Alliance for a Gre
en Revolution in Africa (AGRA)\, recognizing her dedication to improving f
ood security in some of the most vulnerable regions in the world through t
he enhanced use of Earth observation. She received a 2019 Individual Excel
lence Award from Group on Earth Observations (GEO)\, Geneva\, Switzerland.
She was named a 2021 Quartz Africa Innovator 2021\, 2021 Women Leading th
 e Climate Fight\, ABC NEWS\, 2021 Women of Weather\, Tomorrow.io\, 15 Wome
 n Leading the ML4EO Community in 2021\, Radiant Earth Foundation\, 2020 An
Innovator in International Food Security\, NASA\, 2020 Maryland Research
Excellence Honoree of University of Maryland\, College Park. She was featu
