SUMMARY:WFEO-ISC Side-Event at UN 2023 Water Conference
DESCRIPTION:\n\nThe World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) an
d the International Science Council (ISC)\, partners in the UN Scientific
and Technological Community Major Group\, will organize the side-event "Th
e Role of the Science and Technology (S&T) Community on the Pillars for Ac
celerating Progress and Transformative Actions on SDG 6" on 23 March 2023\
 , 2:00 - 3:00 pm EST / 6:00 - 7:00 pm GMT / 7:00 - 8:00 pm CET.\n\nThis si
de-event is organized within the UN 2023 Water Conference that will take p
lace at UN Headquarters in New York\, between 22 and 24 March 2023.\n\nThe
registration page is available in this link: bit.ly/3ZxVprq\n\nLimited ac
cess to safe water and sanitation\, strains on available water resources\,
threats to water use in critical aspects of daily life and exacerbating d
isaster risks in the forms of droughts\, floods and other damage to ecosys
tems still affect too many people worldwide. Sustainable Development Goal
6 (SDG 6) – ‘to ensure availability and sustainable management of wate
r and sanitation for all by 2030’ – supports many\, if not all\, of th
e other 16 SDGs\, particularly on health and disease prevention\, educatio
 n\, food\, gender equality\, energy\, and climate change. \n\nHowever\, we
are alarmingly off-track\, and the issue is only going to become more cri
tical in a context of changing weather patterns under the effects of clima
te change\, migration of populations and shifting resource demands\, poor
management of water resources leading to overuse\, pollution\, damage to c
ritical aquifers and the resulting inadequate supplies of water for critic
al needs\, such as health care and food production. \n\nThe challenges we
face are unprecedented and growing. With less than 10 years to go to achie
ve the SDGs in time\, we need an immediate and integrated global response
to rapidly improve progress on SDG 6.\n\nTherefore\, the UN has launched t
he SDG 6 Global Acceleration Framework – a new\, unifying initiative tha
t involves all sectors of society to speed up progress by improving suppor
t to countries. It is part of the UN Secretary-General’s Decade of Actio
n to deliver the SDGs by 2030. The work will be carried out through action
pillars: Engage\, Align\, Accelerate and Account.\n\nWithin the scope of
the “Accelerate” pillar\, five accelerators will dramatically improve
the international community. These are:\n\nFinancing - Optimized financing
is essential to get resources behind country plans. \nData and informatio
n - Data and information targets resources and measures progress. \nCapaci
ty development - A better-skilled workforce improves service levels and in
creases job creation and retention in the water sector.\nInnovation - New\
, smart practices and technologies will improve water and sanitation resou
rces management and service delivery.\nGovernance - Collaboration across b
oundaries and sectors will make SDG 6 everyone’s business.\n\nTraditiona
lly\, society has advanced after technological innovations have occurred\,
but today\, as with climate change\, changes are happening first and miti
gation and/or adaptation technology is lagging behind. Therefore\, we need
disruptive changes that will allow us to achieve the SDG 6 targets. \n\nF
or this\, the technical and scientific community role is vital\, both in t
erms of providing data and information to support decision-making and the
adoption of policies and practices for more efficient and sustainable wate
r governance and management\; supporting capacity development for improved
water resource management\; as well as driving innovation and supporting
the development and application of improved technologies for water use\, r
ecycling and conservation\, and efforts to reduce excessive costs for wate
r access.\n\nThe side event will aim at highlighting the latest and best s
cientific knowledge\, key initiatives and innovations of the S&T community
within the five pillars – financing\, data and information\, capacity d
evelopment\, innovation and governance - that will lead to accelerated and
transformative action on SDG 6 in the second half of the International De
cade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development”.\n\nSpeakers on th
e side event will be:\n\nProf. José Vieira\, WFEO President.\nDr. Ignacio
González-Castelao\, Chair WFEO Committee on Water - Engineering institut
ions' role in the SDG6 global acceleration framework.\nDr Tom Soo\, Execut
ive Director of the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engine
ering and Research (IAHR) - Hydro-environment research and engineering : b
ringing together sectors and accelerating system-wide solutions towards th
 e SDG's.\nDr Marlene Kanga\, WFEO President 2017-2019 - Strategies for a R
esilient and Sustainable City – Advancing SDG #6: A Case Study of Sydney
  Water Corporation\, Australia.\nMs Shreya Chakraborty\, Researcher - Clim
ate Change Policy and Adaptation\, International Water Management Institut
e\, New Delhi - Bringing socioecological considerations in innovation and
technology solutions for just water action.\n\n\nSpeakers' short biographi
