Report on the National Conference on Food Security in Morocco

The National Conference on Food Security organized by the National Union of Moroccan Engineers with the partnership of the Ministry of agriculture and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) took place last 15 April 2017 in Rabat, Morocco.

The WFEO Engineering and sustainable agriculture(*) Task Group leader Fethi Thabet addressed the conference highlighting the key role played by WFEO and engineers to give practical approaches to end poverty and hunger by 2030 (Sustainable Development Goal #1: “End poverty in all its forms everywhere”), by the following means:

  • Give more attention to young farmers and better dissemination of research finding

  • Better use of water resources

  • Use more resilient agriculture

  • better adaptation to climate change

  • Engineering inputs to reduce food waste and losses especially cereals which represent a heavy burden to most northern African countries trade balance and a threat to their food sovereignty

Fethi Thabet presented the WFEO strategic plan and task group term of reference. More than 70 experts attended to analyze and evaluate the Green Morocco Plan.

Launched in April 2008 by his majesty the king Mohammed VI, the ambitious Green Morocco Plan aims to make the agricultural sector a priority boost to the socio-economic development in Morocco. This strategy is included in the continuity of several major projects at the national level such as creating jobs, fighting poverty or protecting the environment.

(*) Engineering and Sustainable Agriculture is a task group of the WFEO Committee on Engineering and the Environment (CEE)
