Simultaneously, the World Engineers Forum – WEF2017 – was organized from November 27 to 29 under the theme “Safeguarding Humankind’s Heritage, the Great Challenge for Engineers”, gathering some 120 speakers & discussants, and more than 600 delegates from some 60 countries. This Forum was a great opportunity to discuss on a new idea of safeguarding humankind’s heritage and to reflect on the new role of engineering in our ever-changing societies.

President Jorge Spitalnik, from Brazil, opened the WFEO General Assembly.

Prof. Gong Ke (China) was chosen by WFEO members to become President for the period 2019-2021; Reginald Vachon (USA), outgoing treasurer of the Federation, was elected as Executive Vice-president and Majeed Al Gassab from Bahrain as representative of national members to the Executive Council.

The General Assembly took in particular the following decisions.

  • It approved the Federation’s audited accounts and budgets,

  • It endorsed a new fee system allowing WFEO to maintain and expand its mission,

  • It accepted the new chairman of the Disaster Risk Management Committee Prof. Jorge Alva, President of the Colegio de Ingenieros del Peru.

  • It selected:
    • the Institution of Engineers Rwanda as the host of the 2020 WFEO Executive Council meetings and conference in Kigali,

    • the Qatar Society of Engineers for the 2021 WFEO General Assembly meeting and conference in Doha,

    • and the Colegio Federado de Ingenieros y de Arquitectos de Costa Rica for the 2022 Executive Council meetings and conference in San José.

  • It acknowledged the winners of the WFEO Medal of Engineering Excellence, the WFEO Medal of Excellence in Engineering Education and the Hassib Sabbagh Award for Excellence in Engineering Construction.

The activities and projects of the Federation were debated, including the preparation of its 50th anniversary celebrations to be held in 2018, with two major events: a half-day symposium to be organized at UNESCO Fontenoy Building on March 7, and the GEC2018 Executive Council meetings and conference to be organized by our British member ICE in London from October 20 to 26, 2018.

March 4 will be proposed as the UN World Engineers Day.

Their position at the Executive Board coming to an end, Peter Greenwood and Marwan Abdelhamid are commended for their relentless activity at the service of WFEO.

At the end of the General Assembly, President Jorge Spitalnik thanked all participants and passed the presidency to Dr. Marlene Kanga, who presented her action plan. She then chaired the new Executive Board and Executive Council on 2 December in the afternoon.
