WFEO Side Event in the UN Multi-Stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation

The second annual Multi-stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals (STI Forum) will be held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, on 15 and 16 May 2017.

WFEO, the International Council for Science (ICSU) and the International Social Science Council (ISSC) will organize the side event entitled “Science, Engineering and Technology for Smart, Sustainable Cities and Human Settlements” that will take place on 15 May.



The global megatrend of urbanization is a challenge that impacts all the Sustainable Development Goals. Urbanization can be a powerful force to advance all three aspects of a transition to sustainable development – social, economic and environmental. Innovation from scientists, architects, engineers, and many other stakeholders can and is being leveraged to design, build, operate and maintain current and future urban, peri-urban and rural human settlements.

In the wake of Habitat III and the outcomes of the New Urban Agenda, the UN High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development is focusing on “transformation towards sustainable and resilient societies”.

In this context partnerships for implementation and delivery of urbanization solutions must rely on the broader community of knowledge and infrastructure producers, users and stakeholders.

Complemented by good governance and investment capital, science, engineering and technology are seminal assets required to meet the challenges of these giant urban, peri-urban and rural communities which are also crucibles of politics, commerce, education and innovation but often plagued by grinding poverty and slums, particularly in much of the developing world.

Scientists and engineers will be critical in developing sustainable policies and strategies for smart cities but will also be responsible for the design and implementation of solutions.

To that end, this side event can facilitate dialogue and critical thinking among relevant stakeholders and prospective partners. The event will present international initiatives for capacity-building and integrated solutions for smart, resilient and sustainable cities and human settlements being undertaken by governments, business, academia and the NGO community.
