SUMMARY:WFEO CDRM International Webinar “Engineering contributions for Ma
 naging the next pandemics”
DESCRIPTION:\nThe WFEO Committee on Disaster Risk Management (CDRM) and th
e Peruvian Engineers Association (CIP) are pleased to invite you to the in
ternational webinar “Engineering contributions for Managing the next pan
demics that will be held on 18 December 2020.\nLarge-scale epidemics and p
andemics have affected humankind along its history. Their study mainly by
biologists and medical doctors has resulted in the progressive accumulati
on of a large amount of scientific knowledge and right therapeutic practic
es. Nonetheless\, we have not \nbeen able to avoid the enormous loss of li
ves and economic disruption that qualify the ongoing Covid-19 pandemics as
a global disaster.\nDealing with other natural phenomena\, as earthquakes
\, volcanic eruptions\, hurricanes or floods\, we have learnt that disaste
rs can be avoided through defined processes that include the risk reductio
n and a strong preparedness that ensure an effective response when the eve
nt occurs. The same processes can be applied to manage the risk of future
pandemics. Science and technology provide adequate knowledge and diverse t
ools to contribute to the task.\nThe WFEO Committee on Disaster Risk Manag
ement organizes this webinar to present and discuss on:\n\nOverview of the
global organization of early warning for pandemics\, \nThe near-real time
(big) data management and information as support to decision-making\, and
\nEmergency health centers quick building systems.\n

SUMMARY:WFEO-YEFL Side event at COP27 – Utilising expertise of the youth
to bridge the science-policy divide and improve access to finance
DESCRIPTION:\nThe WFEO Committee on Young Engineers / Future Leaders (YEFL)
will co-host the side event “Utilising expertise of the youth to bridge
the science-policy divide and improve access to finance” at the UNFCCC
 COP27 Conference in Sharm el-Sheikh\, Egypt\, on 10 November\, at 18:30
 – 20:00 EET (Eastern European Time) / 17:30 – 19:00 CET (Central Europ
ean Time).\n\nThis is an hybrid event that will take place in the Osiris r
oom (300). Follow the livestream on this link.\n\nThis side event has been
included in the official and first ever Youth Kit for COP.\n\nThe theme w
ill be “Engagement of young engineers\, scientists and youth with lawmak
ers to bridge the science-policy divide and improve access to climate fina
nce to deploy sustainable solutions tailored to local socioeconomic needs\
, including in water and energy.”\n\nYoung people have been pivotal in e
levating a number of critical issues to the forefront of political agendas
\, through a combination of activism\, advocacy and thought leadership.\nH
owever\, it is paramount that all barriers to further youth engagement and
agency are reduced or eliminated to establish\, highlight and advance the
youth agenda at all levels of political engagement. The benefits of youth
inclusion in decision-making rest on the fact that they possess perspecti
ve\, knowledge and expertise which can engage lawmakers to produce the req
uired structural change for tackling the emerging climate issues.\n\nThe e
vent will feature an intergenerational dialogue between lawmakers and youn
g leaders and will provide case studies from across the world (with perspe
ctives from developed and developing countries\, SIDS and LDCs). The conve
rsation will be solution-oriented and will be held in the context of bridg
ing the science-policy divide and improving access to climate finance\, wi
th identification of barriers and opportunities.\n\nThe event will also se
rve as a start for the conversation on a best-practice and widely applicab
le framework for youth engagement\, which will be produced by the organise
rs and their partners.\nBefore COP27\, the organisers intend to launch a q
ualitative consultation with the key stakeholders (youth organisations and
government structures and individual policymakers/intergovernmental organ
isations)\, as well as a quantitative consultation which would be shared w
idely. The consultations will identify barriers and opportunities for yout
h engagement in policymaking and will help inform the basis for the framew
ork for youth engagement to address the science-policy divide\, boost clim
ate action and enhance representation of young people.\nThe event will sho

SUMMARY:WFEO-WIE webinar “Gender Perspectives on Achieving the SDG 5”
DESCRIPTION:\nThe WFEO Committee on Women in Engineering in collaboration w
ith the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET)\, the Internationa
l Network of Women Engineers and Scientists (INWES)\, the Nigerian Society
of Engineers (NSE)\, and the Technological Association\, Malaysia\, are p
leased to invite you to the webinar “Gender Perspectives on Achieving th
e SDG 5” that will be held on 19 November 2022\, at 10 AM GMT / 11 AM CE
T\n\nThe 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable De
velopment Goals (SDGs) adopted by world leaders in 2015\, embody a roadmap
for progress that is sustainable and leaves no one behind. The SDG5 seeks
to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. Achieving Gen
der Equality is integral to achieving each of the other 16 goals and it is
only by ensuring the rights of women and girls across all the goals that
the world will get equity\, justice and inclusion and economies that work
for all. Fulfilling this right is the best chance we have in meeting some
of the most pressing challenges of our time—from economic crises\, lack
of health care\, to climate change\, violence against women and escalating
conflicts all over the globe\, elimination of gender-based violence\, dis
crimination and censorship\; women’s economic\, empowerment through inco
me security and decent work\; leadership\, equitable representation and ge
nder-responsive systems of governance\; and participation in scientific an
 d technological developments\, including frontier technologies.\n\nThe Com
mittee of Women in Engineering (WIE) realizes the need for men to be partn
ers and allies to women\, in order to achieve SDG5. WIE also recognizes th
at men themselves also suffer from forms of inequality. This webinar on th
e International Day of the Man is an opportunity for us to listen to men\,
as they share their own views on ways that men can support and partner wi
th women to achieve gender equality for all.\n\nThe webinar promises to be

SUMMARY:WFEO-ISC Side-Event at UN 2023 Water Conference
DESCRIPTION:\n\nThe World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) an
d the International Science Council (ISC)\, partners in the UN Scientific
and Technological Community Major Group\, will organize the side-event "Th
e Role of the Science and Technology (S&T) Community on the Pillars for Ac
celerating Progress and Transformative Actions on SDG 6" on 23 March 2023\
 , 2:00 - 3:00 pm EST / 6:00 - 7:00 pm GMT / 7:00 - 8:00 pm CET.\n\nThis si
de-event is organized within the UN 2023 Water Conference that will take p
lace at UN Headquarters in New York\, between 22 and 24 March 2023.\n\nThe
registration page is available in this link: bit.ly/3ZxVprq\n\nLimited ac
cess to safe water and sanitation\, strains on available water resources\,
threats to water use in critical aspects of daily life and exacerbating d
isaster risks in the forms of droughts\, floods and other damage to ecosys
tems still affect too many people worldwide. Sustainable Development Goal
6 (SDG 6) – ‘to ensure availability and sustainable management of wate
r and sanitation for all by 2030’ – supports many\, if not all\, of th
e other 16 SDGs\, particularly on health and disease prevention\, educatio
 n\, food\, gender equality\, energy\, and climate change. \n\nHowever\, we
are alarmingly off-track\, and the issue is only going to become more cri
tical in a context of changing weather patterns under the effects of clima
te change\, migration of populations and shifting resource demands\, poor
management of water resources leading to overuse\, pollution\, damage to c
ritical aquifers and the resulting inadequate supplies of water for critic
al needs\, such as health care and food production. \n\nThe challenges we
face are unprecedented and growing. With less than 10 years to go to achie
ve the SDGs in time\, we need an immediate and integrated global response
to rapidly improve progress on SDG 6.\n\nTherefore\, the UN has launched t
he SDG 6 Global Acceleration Framework – a new\, unifying initiative tha
t involves all sectors of society to speed up progress by improving suppor
t to countries. It is part of the UN Secretary-General’s Decade of Actio
n to deliver the SDGs by 2030. The work will be carried out through action
pillars: Engage\, Align\, Accelerate and Account.\n\nWithin the scope of
the “Accelerate” pillar\, five accelerators will dramatically improve
the international community. These are:\n\nFinancing - Optimized financing
is essential to get resources behind country plans. \nData and informatio
n - Data and information targets resources and measures progress. \nCapaci
ty development - A better-skilled workforce improves service levels and in

SUMMARY:WFEO-WIE webinar "Resilient Women\, Resilient World"
DESCRIPTION:\n\nThe WFEO Committee on Women in Engineering in collaboration
with the International Network of Women Engineers and Scientists (INWES)\
, the International Coalition for Sustainable Infrastructure (ICSI)\, the
Institution of Civil Engineers UK\, the Engineering Council of South Afric
a\, the Nigerian Society of Engineers\, and the Ghana Institution of Engin
eers\, are pleased to invite you to the webinar “Resilient Women\, Resil
ient World” that will be held on 1st September 2023\, at 3 PM WAT / 4 PM
CEST / 10 PM MYT.\n\nThe registration link is available in this page.\n\n
Background\nAs we enter the last quarter of 2023\, we are virtually 6 year
s away from the deadline of the 2030 Agenda and if the SDGs are to be achi
eved and to be truly sustainable\, with no one being be left behind\, they
need to be implemented and owned by local actors in every part of the glo
be. Therefore\, speakers who are from diverse backgrounds\, from different
parts of the world\, will speak to the theme through the highlighted SDGs
and interrogate them. All of this form a critical core for progress and t
he webinar aims to further promote knowledge and thus catalyze action. By
addressing these interconnected SDGs along with Resilience of Women\, we a
im to achieve holistic development and promote the creation of sustainable
communities\, that prioritize the well-being of individuals especially fe
males\, equity\, and environmental stewardship. The discourse therefore hi
ghlights the fact that women play a crucial role in driving progress towar
ds achieving each of those goals.\n\nThe theme of the webinar contemplates
a resilient world which can only be achieved by the integration of the SD
G’s and how a resilient woman in any color\, race\, tribe or social stra
ta is the mainstay of such a world. The speakers will discuss how resilien
t women are instrumental in driving progress across various SDGs as well a
s their contributions in health\, education\, gender equality\, water and
 sanitation\, energy\, industry and infrastructure and cities\n\nExpected o
utcomes\nThe Women in Engineering Committee\, in partnership with INWES an
d ICSI and various Country Engineering institutions across the world\, thr
ough collaborative discussions proposes that an integrated approach to pro
moting the SDGs related to health\, education\, gender equality\, water an
 d sanitation\, energy\, climate\, water and sanitation\, industry and citi
es\, climate action\, and cities are vital for achieving sustainable devel
opment and creating a more equitable and resilient world for all. \n\nThe
emphasis will be that empowering and supporting women is therefore crucial
for realizing the full potential of the SDGs and building a sustainable f
uture. By recognizing and empowering resilient women\, we can accelerate p
rogress towards achieving all the SDGs.\n\nThe webinar also celebrates and
disseminates examples of SDG implementation in action\, with a focus on t
he Role of Women and Resilience (both personal and societal).\n\nModerator

nWe needed more than a decade to achieve what we have today\, how will we
achieve our global targets? Can policy provision ensure we have a more sus
tainable future as well as achieving The Paris Agreement target for 2030 a
nd 2050?\n\nAs we approach COP28\, and the world continues to experience s
ignificant impacts from climate change it has never been more critical to
advocate for the change we desperately need. The climate has already warme
d at an accelerated pace than initially predicted and the devastating impa
ct has not spared any part of the globe from its unprecedented destruction
. We are at a pivotal point in our lifetime and as young engineers we want
to keep encouraging change from a governmental perspective.\n\nThe change
we are currently seeing is a result of infrastructure investment over pas
t decade which required significant funding and support to achieve this. T
he outcome of these investments is indicating positive outcomes with Sydne
y Light Rail being a good example. This is\, however\, a single form of in
vestment in transport supporting one city. There are still significant iss
ues to deal with on a greater scale including in other parts of Australasi
a such as Auckland with its flooding damages requiring $2 Billion (NZD) to
recover of which $390m is to recover the road network and $820m is requir
ed to build resilience in the network.\n\nWith COP28 around the corner whe
re policies are topical for the summit\, how do we ensure policies are cap
turing the correct change focus and scale of effort across multiple infras
tructure components providing mode shift\, resilience and changing cities
to be less car reliant by densification? How can this policy dictate the n
ext decade’s funding to serve society and consequently provide better cl
imate outcomes? Is there a way where a green economics modal is developed
that provides a better weight to climate solutions than vehicle related be
nefits to truly capture the population proportion that benefit from rapid
transport outcomes especially when land use change are prioritised with th
 e rapid transport infrastructure.\n\nModerator:\n\nWaldo Posthumus\, Senio
